Our History

Miss graceCBM, Children’s Bible Ministries, began its work in North Carolina in the 1940’s. However, it wasn’t until 1955 that the work began in the Lumberton area. CBM came to the area because a believer among the Lumbee Indians, Mrs. Thomas Blue, had a burden for the lost boys and girls of her race. Mrs. Blue communicated with the CBM General Director, and after much prayer and contacts, CBM began ministering in this area. Miss Grace Garthwaite (Pictured right) was the first missionary in this area and ministered to over 12,000 Indian children a month.
Times have changed, but CBM Mid-Atlantic has continued to minister and serve in this area. We currently reach 31 schools with Released Time classes. This means that over 4,000 kids a month hear the gospel that might never have been reached otherwise. We have been blessed with a large tract of land, which we are currently developing into a children’s Bible camp. Overnight camp began the summer of 2003 on the property. We are very excited about the work that God is doing in this area!
